Director's Letter

Dearest delegates, directors, and guests,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to UWCSEA East for our twelfth annual conference. We are delighted to host students from across South East Asia, gathered here to test ideas, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another.

This year’s theme, “Collegial Contention”, captures what good diplomacy should be: rigorous, honest, and grounded in respect. Debate is not about victory but about understanding. I encourage you to engage with clarity and authenticity. Speak to persuade, not to perform. Avoid the temptation to sound complex when simplicity can best reveal truth. Say what you mean, and listen as carefully as you argue. The best delegates are those who remain open to changing their minds.

We are honoured to welcome our guest speakers, whose insights will remind us of the real-world relevance of diplomacy. Massive thanks go to our MUN co-pilots, Mr Ryley, Mr Owens, Mr Dinsdale, Mr Dunn, our facilities teams, and the utterly wondrous MUN Executive Leadership team. Their persistence and creativity have brought this event to life. I also thank the visiting faculty and directors, whose guidance and patience make the chaos of an MUN weekend look deceptively organised.

To the delegates: you represent the spirit of the United Nations, and what you practise here matters. Thank you for caring enough about global issues to give your time and energy this weekend and beyond. I hope this weekend strengthens your curiosity about the world and reminds you that diplomacy depends on people who care enough to keep the conversation going.

With best wishes for a rewarding conference,
